About Verinag
Verinag sits majestically at an altitude of 1,876 meters. Legend has it that the Verinag spring, nestled in the serene landscapes of Kashmir, serves as the primary source of the mighty river Jhelum. At its heart lies an octagonal base, encircled by a sheltered pathway. The ambitious construction endeavors were initiated by the Mughal Emperor Jehangir, who commenced work on both the base and the arcade. However, it wasn't until the era of Emperor Shah Jahan that the project reached completion. Along the eastern stream of Verinag, remnants of Mughal pavilions and baths stand as silent witnesses to a bygone era. Renowned as the Verinag Spring, it pays homage to Nila Nag, the son of the esteemed Hindu sage Kashyap Rishi, credited with establishing the domain of Jammu and Kashmir. Originally circular in shape, the spring underwent a transformation during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1620. He commanded its renovation, shaping it into the traditional Mughal octagon, adding to its allure for tourists exploring Verinag.
